Lesson 03 / 10

Make the route fit your real life

Your county starts the search. Your commute and schedule decide what works.

A program can look close on a map and still be difficult to reach at the required time. Ask where classes meet, where work starts and how often jobsites change. Evening classes may accompany daytime construction work; they do not promise an evening-only job.

Use your regional page to make a contact list. Named programs are starting points, with intake and vacancies unconfirmed unless explicitly stated otherwise. If there is no named nearby option, Florida’s apprenticeship office and your local CareerSource center are useful next contacts. A blank local list is a research task, not a verdict on your future.

Need a GED, language support or help rebuilding math skills? Ask the provider which requirement matters for your particular route, then check local adult education. If you have military experience, ask about approved VA training benefits and veteran entry options; eligibility and local availability need individual confirmation.

A tight budget deserves a direct question about assistance with training, transport and required equipment. Funding is not automatic. Get the eligibility, application and approval process before including support in your budget.

Your next action

Choose two contacts you can realistically reach and record their next intake date or follow-up date.

A question worth asking

“Where would I work and attend class, at what times, and what support can I apply for?”
